RemoveSpam vs YouTube's built-in spam filter
YouTube’s built-in spam filter is free, already on, and catches a lot of ordinary spam — you should configure it regardless. RemoveSpam exists for what it holds, misses, or flags too late: impersonation, coordinated bot waves and rotating scam links.
What YouTube's built-in spam filter is
YouTube Studio automatically detects spam "to help maintain a healthy conversation", marking comments as "Likely spam" based on the text of a comment or a commenter’s behaviour, and collecting them in a Held tab for you to approve or remove. You can also hide users from your channel, report comments, and restrict who may comment at all.
Side by side
| RemoveSpam | YouTube's built-in spam filter | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | From $149/month per channel | Free, built in |
| Already running | After you connect your channel | Yes, by default |
| What happens to suspect comments | Deleted, then logged for you | Held for you to review and action |
| Needs your attention | No | Yes — the Held tab is a queue someone must work |
| Impersonation of the creator | Specifically targeted | Not a distinct category |
| Coordinated bot waves | Treated as one event | Assessed comment by comment |
| Rotating scam link domains | Destination treated as the signal | Blocklists are literal strings you maintain |
| Audit trail | Every deletion logged with a reason | Held tab, plus your own review |
Configure the free tools first
This is genuine advice and not a throat-clearing preamble: set up YouTube’s own controls before paying anyone, including us. Add a blocked-words list, hide the accounts that keep coming back, and decide whether to hold comments with links for review. For a channel with a moderate spam problem, that may be enough, and if it is, you should not be buying a subscription.
Where the native tools stop being enough
Two structural limits. First, YouTube holds rather than removes: "Likely spam" lands in a queue, and a queue is only as fast as the person working it. A scam comment held at midnight is still a scam comment nobody has dealt with at 8am. Second, a blocklist is a list of literal strings, and scam operations rotate domains, swap characters and break links apart precisely because blocklists are literal.
Then there is the category YouTube does not model at all: a comment is not inherently spammy because it says "congratulations, you have been selected." It is a scam because the account posting it has copied your name and your profile picture, under your video, to intercept your audience. That relationship is the signal, and it is not one a general-purpose filter is looking for.
The honest threshold
A dedicated service is worth its price when a scam comment on your channel costs real money — someone else’s. Crypto, finance and trading channels hit that threshold routinely, which is why they are most of our customers. A cooking channel getting occasional link spam almost certainly does not, and the free tools plus five minutes a week are the right answer there.
Use both
These are not alternatives. YouTube’s controls stay on and keep doing their job; RemoveSpam covers what reaches past them. Nothing about running one requires turning off the other.
Choose YouTube's built-in spam filter if
- Your spam volume is low and occasional
- You can work the Held tab regularly without it becoming a chore
- Your spam is keyword-shaped and a blocked-words list holds up
- You are not willing to pay for moderation — a completely reasonable position
Choose RemoveSpam if
- The Held tab has become a queue nobody works
- Scam comments impersonate you and target your viewers’ money
- Bot waves arrive within minutes of publishing
- Link spam keeps returning on new domains however often you blocklist
